running drives and fans etc of second psu?

Hey all.
Kinda of a odd question, but i have a server case from my old duallie ppro and its AT.
The thing is is the at ps is a beast- I wanna say its rated at 300-350 watts but i cant remember
Its huge and built mucher better then alot of pos ps's nowadays... i just dont have the heart to toss her out..
So could i power hd, cdroms and fans off this while useing an atx ps to power the mainboard and componets?
Will it do any harm? My insticts point to yes,its ok to do- but i have never done this b4

yes it can be done, you would just need to plug a switch into the mother board header to turn it on...
I know there are pages out there that will help you with this...
I don't have a link or remember what pins the switch would need to be hooked to...

Since it's an AT power supply you don't need a mobo switch to turn it on. You would probably want to incorporate a relay of some sort to turn it on when you power up your regular system but it could be done.

that site said how to modify a atx psu to do that. but you had a at psu. ill put my idea here for doing that as well. i would purchase a relay that can handle at least 125v 10 amps and a 12v or 5v trigger. i would leave the switch that is on the at psu on it but turned on(not plugged in) open the psu and you will see the back of the plug where the power cord goes. it would have 3 wires white black and green. cut the white or black wire it dont matter which just dont cut both. then you can solder/crimp an extension wire on the two halves. you take your relay and attach the wires to the two pins that make contact when the relay is activated. next you attach wire to the 2 trigger pins. and tap them into the 12v or 5v on the atx psu. when you turn on your atx psu the at one will turn on as well. here is a
Diagram if the switch wire is too long tou could chop it and connect the wires so it always on or just shorten it if its in the way. why not to use it is at psu's switch contacts both ac wires at the same time and most smaller relays dont do that. hope this helps
