here's a diagram of my setup right now... my goal is to enable Internet Connection Sharing on the laptop in order to create a bridge from the Xbox to the internet.
the problem is when I try to enable ICS, I get an error saying that a LAN connection is using an IP address needed for automatic addressing. the big question is, can the DHCP router play in the same sandbox as the ICS computer?
Now I'm not 100% positive but I think your problem is the fact when you enable ICS, it wants to use the .1 address. That you have reserved already. If you use a different IP and then enable ICS it should pick up a secondary IP as the .1 IP. In a normal network scheme the .1 address is reserved for the router/gateway. You would then use an IP address range up from that.
thanks gand. I tried setting the laptop IP to .2, and it still gave me the same error. I tried some combinations of ips and DHCP ranges on the router and it seems that if i make one thing work, something else doesnt, my goals:
1. keep the DHCP enabled for the router
2. allow laptop and desktop (and xbox) to see internet
3. allow laptop, desktop and router to communicate with each other as a LAN.
