Need recommendations for a DVD player

...so I'm watching T2 on my Sony S360 this evening (which is advertised on the front as capable of playing VCD...but it doesn't, the POS...), and one of the twins has just put his finger thru the eyeball of the other twin, and the coffee hits the floor...and it does a freeze-frame.
So I look for my remote, thinking I rolled over the Pause button, but the remote is five feet away. I hit Play, Pause, etc...nothing.
Eject worked. So I do a quick swipe of the disc, thinking it just needs a little cleaning. It grinds. "NO DISC".
So I put in another DVD (grind). Then a CD (grind). Then another CD (grind). Then a DVD (grind). Then a CD cleaner (grind). Then a DVD again (grind).
"NO DISC", every time.
My new player must have an S-Video connector, component would also be nice (but not necessary). COAX connector is necessary, and optical is optional. It would be nice if it played both + and - R discs, but I believe + is going to win the "Beta/VHS War", so + drives would be preferable. Natch, MP3 would be nice, but not necessary.
Most of my HT is Sony, but considering my S360 wasn't as advertised and has now gone TU after less than 3 years, I am willing to entertain other manufacturers.
Any suggestions on specific makes/models? Thx.
