having some problems...some sort of conflict

Post by marscheese »

I don't think anything else in my system matters...so I won't bother posting my full system specs. Basically, running Windows98, I have a Sound Blaster Live! and a Radeon 9700 Pro. If the drivers are installed for both, then the system locks at the login screen. I tried moving around the Sound Blaster, moved it into 4 different PCI slots...nothing. Keeps locking. Tried two different versions of drivers for both the Radoen and Sound Blaster. Is this an IRQ conflict?? I just don't know what to do. Is it something I just have to live with??? (that is, having to use onboard sound/get a new sound card?)

damn sblives! Ill bet 10 to 1 thats your problem.. personally i have 2 of them and love the way they sound, but they are notorious for causeing irq problems , especially on win9x systems

Just thinking out loud but do you have the onboard sound disabled in the bios?

Pull ALL your cards except the video card (make a note of which slot each one was in - you don't want to move them around unless you have to), see if it locks up.

If not, install each card ONE BY ONE. Start with the SBLive as it's the likely culprit (although it may be that it has a conflict with another card and not the Radeon).

If any card gives you a problem, move it to another slot and try again.

Hope this helps.

I've done all that *FP*...no matter what slot I put the sound card in, the conflict still comes up. The video card is in the AGP slot, so I can't exactly move it.

I might just format my 98 partition and try ME, hope it would stop the conflict, 'cause I don't want to bother with buying a new sound card. Only problem is, I'm not sure if that'd fuck up my dual boot setup right now...

I'm guessing it's just a conflict that I can't do anything about. So I'll just figure something out. Thanks everyone.

You could try disbling a com port or ide controller to free up an irq.

Sure I read it on a creative forum somwhere.

Hope it helps Brianz2002

MARCHEESE: Is it definately the SB Live?

- Did you pull ALL your cards and did that eliminate the problem?

- If so, did you put ALL the cards back except the SBLive and confirm that there's still no problem?

If it's just the SBLive causing the problem, I'd go out and by a $20 C-media card to replace it. Better than that SBLive.

Another thing that sometimes helps with uncooperative SBLive cards is to disable ACPI in BIOS, but you'll likely have to turn your computer off manually afterwards (like the old AT systems). I'd consider a new sound card before doing that.
