That is what I use: 512 megs of ram running win2k pro. You will get slightly better performance with Win2k because it won't have all that bloat that XP has, according to several experts that encode DvD's.
I did a clean install of Win2k with SP3 and nothing else. It's bare bones setup with only all my DvD apps. You will need a very large hard drive. I have 3 drives that equal 70 megs. Your typical 2 hour movie can eat up 20 megs after you rip the DvD and make a BIN file for burning. I use a small SCSI boot drive that is only 4 gigs, and 2 other drives: a 40 and a 30.
You also want to format it using NTFS, at least the partition or drive that will be handling the encoding. This will allow you to use large file size without hitting the 2 gig limit of fat32.
