Me want dually system!

Post by knightofnee1112 »

i think I will be getting a summer job and will have some money to blow, I want to make a dual CPU system (two 1700+ Xp's) but I don't know if it's worth it, will windows 2K pro make all my games and f@H utilize both CPU's?

lets say I have a 2100+ singal CPU system that is getting 10K in 3dmark2k1se if i had dual 2100+ systems would i get a much higher score? like 18k? or does all the applications have to support multiple threading?

dual cpus are great for folding, audio and video encoding, photoshop work, file serving, ftp mail server etc... Even if games are multi threaded the diff in negligable, now you could run a mail server ftp, fold and play games all at the same tim, and thats where 2 cpus would benefit you in a destop enviroment

I have a dually system: 2 P3-550MHz cpu's running Win2k. The purpose of the rig is to encode movies which require a lot of cpu power. Most of the video utilities that I use support dual cpu, so the encoding times are reduces. It also allows me to do other things on the rig while encoding, such as moving files or folders, or even buring a CD.

I think I will end up using it mainly for folding and have it compile stuff for me. I was wondering if there was an application that will port an application, or at least it's sourcecode to utilize multithreading, If so, Linux would be the perfect platform being most anything can be found in source form, i.e. Game engine ports :-D

not really, multithreading is complex and must be wrote in the source code of a program, however most NT based os's and linux will switch back and forth dividing the work amoung the two cpus so you can max out both cpus if you are constatly performing multiple tasks. Dont even think about games, the only one ive ever played was q3 and with smp enabled the perf. difference was about 2 fps LOL

doesn't a linux cluster do what i am talking about? or would i have to make it run many, many instances of folding@home?
