im not a fan of amps built into the dvd players, I like seperate componats.. My receiver and my dvd player are both twice the size of that unit... So it depends on your preferences, but the distortion ratio on that unit is horrible- 10% ! A decent setup wi;; be 1% or less, mine is rate at 0.025%

Yes, the distortion of 10% stinks though I think that's probably at full power. Panasonic lists it at 1%, which is still quite high lookie here ... and one online shop lists it at 10% and 1% right here. It looks like every complete set at Circuit City below $400 has a 10% rating.

I also prefer seperate components but those hometheatre-in-a-box sets are nice to start your own HT experience. That's how I started, with a Dolby Surround set at that pricerange which I bought at my local Costco. Since then I upgraded to an all seperate components setup.
My receivers speaker output has a THD of 0.04% (20Hz-20KHz, 8 ohms, 85W) and 0.07% (1KHz, 8 ohms, 100W). It also has a THD of 0.025% (20Hz-20KHz, 8 ohms, 40W) for all audio inputs to Main SP Out.

If you want a home theater it means you want good sound with music/movies so dont' cheap out and get a HT-in-a-box....just save up a little more for something you might keep for more than a 6 months, cause trust me, once you start to hear other people setups you'll get the itch to upgrade ;) Thats just my opinion...
