P4 mounting/retention unit

got an Abit IT7 Max 2, v2 845PE chipset board, but I didnt get a retention mechanism for a HSF, can I use any for any brand name board or do I need one specially for the Abit??

Strange that you didn't get one..my IT72 Max2 came with one. Anyway, I'm fairly certain that you can use any 3rd party retention mechanism, because some companies bundle them with their heatsinks.
