You can get DVD-RAM drives for about $600. Far cry from $5000. But you won't be able to make DVDs that will play in a DVD drive since they don't include the encryption algorythms or even make them public. Sort of defeats the purpose of encryption, wouldn't it?
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.
I seem to remember that DVD-RAM drives are designed to create discs that can only be played back in DVD-RAM drives...defeating the purpose of ejecting in the first place, much less the encryption issues.
Actually, considering how cheap most DVDs are and the fact that few flicks are worth watching more than once or twice (at best) IMHO, you might as well just buy the DVD and be done with it.
Even if a good DVD burner was sold for say $250 (like a very good CD burner costs), it'd take alot of copies to justify that expence compared to the uses that a cdr has.
