My Friggin Internet Explorer is so screwed up...

:( It seems like one problem after another. I recently did Windows Update from Start and installed all the latest updates just to make sure I had everything. Now I can't access the Windows Update page at all. It comes up as just a blank page in Internet Explorer. This isn't even the biggest problem. I need to do some homework for my... A+ class (go figure). The home work is powerpoints converted to be viewable on the web. I had my friend check the exact same site and it worked fine for him. For me it comes up as just a grey screen. No scroll bars, no pictures, no boxes with the red x. Just a grey internet explorer window. I have no idea what's wrong, I wouldn't even know where to start. I can access any other sites that I'd normally go to just fine, o yea and my yahoo mail box is a little messed up too for some odd reason. It doesn't show the lines between emails or borders in the yahoo mail. I really really really don't wanna reformat and I'm only looking at that as a last possible option cause in doing so I'd lose my music and movies, all my installation files, etc. I don't have enough cd's to make back ups or copys of everything and I'm not connected to any network to dump them on another computer. Any suggestions would be greatly accepted. :(

Using XP? If so then I'd suggest doing a "repair" install. It isn't a format and doesn't replace your files, it just repairs XP. Insert the XP cd and after a few prompts it mentions the "repair install", so check that and continue.

I'd do a full virus scan first. If you don't have one then try this good free one .

Try the free anti-virus I linked to above. It's healed and found some viri that norton couldn't. That's when I stopped using norton.

It may or may not work, but it's free so why not try it. ;) After installing then select "run complete test".

If it let's you run the av and cannot heal it, copy the virus name here and we can do more research on it and perhaps how to get rid of it.

Not sure if win2k has a repair selection, maybe one who is more familiar with win2k can answer that.

Have you tried to delete all the IE cache files? Sometimes the become corrupt and won't display pages correctly. This might be because of the size of the cache. I have mine set to 64 megs, but I've seen them as high as 300 megs and it can cause problems.

For some stupid reason, IE by default sets the cache as high as 1200Mb. It's a known problem with IE that cache sizes over 50Mb in IE 5 & 5.5 and over 200Mb in IE6 cause VERY flaky problems.

Even Dell figured this out - lately I've noticed all their systems come configured for 120Mb cache. I like to use 100Mb.

I don't think that's what's wrong in your case, but it can't hurt.
