I worked on a system for a friend's dad, and he had installed a new HDD himself, a fuj- i dunno how to spell it. anyway, he installed it, and being a sort of person that thinks he knows something he doesn't the computer wouldn't work, and as you all know, compaq is very bad at making good recovery disks. i finnaly got it to work and boot, using the recovery disks. i had to kill a bunch of applications that were making it goof up and not fucntion properly. and after all of my hard work. he comes back to me a couple days ago saying just before windows accualy starts (getting into the GUI) in the boot screen, it just shuts itself off! i tried it and sure enough, it does. i presed the ESC key and it flashes an error just before it shuts down. any idea's on what's wrong? and naturaly how to fix it, I am going to reinstall the first hard drive and see if it will work properly, might be the PSU for the lappy can't handle the new HDD. anyway tell me what you guys think. this labtop is a compaq i forget the model number, i will post the model number asap, but if this is a common lappy prob, go me.

This isn't one of those old Compaqs that store the BIOS information on the HDD is it?
At any rate, check out their site, they really do have a lot of great info if you take the time to search for it.

nah, this is a pos lappy, but that bad. (compaq/HP are the absolute worst OEM's in my head) at any rate, I'm still at a loss. and i belive it's time to chop it up in little chunks, and load it up into my potato gun, mulch the back yard with compaq.

heheh. So many Compaq and HP haters. Then again, my experience with Compaq mainly stems from their excellent line of enterprise Proliant rack mount servers, and thats where they kick ass.
My laptop was an HP Omnibook, never had a single problem with that. Usually, for me, I buy a corporate laptop and stay away from consumer grade. You pay a bit more, usually don't get the Geforce2Go or Mobile radeons, but the durability is worth it imho

Well, I havent had a Compaq lappy for a while, still using my old (1.13Ghz) HP Omnibook, which has given me 0 problems in the year and a half or so I've had it.

Indeed, I like it. Was never a bigger HP or Compaq guy until I started working with their enterprise stuff, then realized that overall it's high quality, just the consumer stuff thats crap (usually).
Though my mom did own a Toshiba Satellite about 5 years ago that she accidentally drove over in her explorer. LCD smashed to pieces, keyboard nonexistant.
Plugged in an external monitor, keyboard and mouse and she fired right up with nary a complaint. Now THATS a laptop! Don't make em like that anymore!
