All v.92 adds is the ability to see who's calling you while your online, quick connect, and Modem-on-hold, so you can talk to someone on the phone and still be downloading. It also has introduces a new compression routine, v.44 vs the v.90's v.42 which is a 6 to 1 compression where as v.90 is 4 to 1.
For the most part, it won't increase connection stability and such, though there *was* talk about it being introduced in later revisions of the protocol. Most ISP's don't even really support it still, but I'm fairly sure Earthlink will since they are pretty huge.
If your having problems with that Diamond modem, check and see if they have any firmware upgrades. I used to have a Diamond SupraExpress 56k voice v.90 and would connect at 46k all the time, then did a firmware upgrade and got a solid error-free 53kbps connect on the same phone lines about 99% of the time.
