Snoopin through Tigerdirect and came upon this. got my thinkin  :w hip

Ram has different numbers (16x64, 32x64, 64x64, 32x72, etc)
Basicly as I understand it, those numbers reflect the bandwith and the capacity of the ram stick. ??

my question is, do certain boards/procs require certain types? I guess I've never really looked at them before, i usually just buy it and stick it in :D

64x64_____________________32x64

Correct, for the most part. 16meg x 64, for example, is a stick of ram that uses 16meg chips witha 64bit datapath between them. You can figure out the size by multiplying the 2 numbers together, then dividing by 8 (for non-ECC ram) or 9 (for ecc ram). 16 * 64 = 1024 1024/8 = 128. It's a 128MB stick of ram.

And for the second Q, for the most part it doesn't matter at all. Most makers use the same format, so a 128mb stick is usually 16x64, 256 is 32x64, 512mb is 64x64, and 1 GB is 128x64.

In your example numbers, the 32x72 represents a 256MB DIMM of ECC ram. It's sorta confusing, but I hope that helps!
