I am using a Zalman flower-type hsf. It comes witha 92mm fan (rather noisy and not recognized by motherboard). I bought a good-quality Sunon 120mm (25mm thick) 3-pin fan and a speed conroller that fits into a PCI slot. Mobo now recognizes quieter fan but temps are up a few degrees with controller on medium.
As you may know, the fan for a Zalman sort of hangs over the heatsink. There is plenty of clearance between the fan and the sink. How about if I put a 120mm to 80mm plastic adapter in between. It would screw onto the back of the fan and still hang over the sink with clearance to spare, and it weighs almost nothing. (Or I could even make my own, but I'd probably screw it up).
Does this sound workable? Heatsink really needs a 92mm fan and I'd only be aiming 80mm at it. Does that make any difference, seeing as the 120mm fan doesn't really reach every bit of surface area anyway. Sorry if this is a dopey question.

The assembly gestalltet itself just as simply as with the standard Slk-800. after the foil of the base plate was removed and the processor core with thermal compound moistened, leaves one the 6-Punkt-Halteklammer in the base noses to engage. Subsequently, the radiator box is aligned centrically on the base. By means of slotted bolt turners finally the catch side of the fixing clip down pressed to these on the base engages. A strammer contact pressure develops, whereby a good waermeaufnahme is ensured. Although the additionally existing PU Schaumpads provides for a safe seat on the processor, the PC should very carefully be transported and/or the radiators before transport be developed.

I don't think that would work too well. Have you tried using the 92mm fan connected to a 3-4 pin adapter and not plugged in directly to the mobo? Unless you really want to monitor rpms.
The fan is right over the heatsink like this?
Also, if using the 120mm, try adjusting the placement of it. Even try it where the air is centered over where the actual cpu is, not the fans hub. That hub might be interferring some.
And btw, having a larger fan does have its uses. It helps to cool surrounding components too.
