CDRW not reconized in win 95??

A friend brought me a pentium 166, 64mb ram, with 2 gig and 240meg hard drives in it to work on, running win 95! It's working now and went home, but!!

It does not find CDRW's. Tried to play a VCD in media player to see if it would work, but the player would crash. SO I got player 6.4 from the M$ site, burned it to rw, and her system could not read it. Tried burning a couple ways onto RW, but no go.

SO I found a DVD/VCD player off the web, 840k zip file and put that on her system with a floppie!
Now I can play VCD's off the CDr's just fine in her system. Still does not reconize a cdrw as even being in the drive though.

So would that be an old cd-drive that does not read rw disks or does 95 not know what they are??

I geuss I could have burnt a CDr for a 3mb MS media player file, but it seamed such a waist! Besides I found a great player instead.

Main thing is I will be wanting to send files over to her kid later, especailly when mine is spending the night. So does that system need a new CD drive, or upgrade to win 98se?

I'm pretty sure my Pentium and AMD DX4 100 both read cdrw's just fine, but both have newer drives and win 98SE.

It's the drive. Lot's of older CD drives (more than 5 years old) won't read CD-RW discs. I run into that problem all the time, which is why I started using CD-R's for the discs in my service kit.

Thanks.

I been using CDr's for the stuff I need often and large programs. First time I've tried using the CDRW though.

Say I was thinking about that old cd drive in that win95 system.

Think I could put a DVD player in it? I have a new Lite-on 16x DVD drive. I read the requirements on the box when she was here, but her system doesn't meet minimum requirements.

However, that's probably software not hardware requirements. I'm sure the system will use it as a cd drive fine, then the cdrw's should work. Does 95 support DVD? The box only listed back as far as 98.
I figure that and whatever else she was short on was really for the Power DVD software.

I did put that little program, very nice one it looked like, on that system while it was here, and I think it is a DVD player also, although I only installed it to play VCD. If so, she shouldn't need the software in the box anyway.

Just a thought as I just realized, 2 hardrives, a cd burner, and the new DVD recorder, I just ran out of IDE connectors with one device left over :(

Band new DVD drive, and no connecter for it, bummer.
WHat's a good IDE card?

She don't have a phone, so if I need to download anything like codecs or whatever then I have to do it before I go over if she wants to buy the drive.

It'll work fine as a CD-Rom drive. DVD playback would be hopeless without a hardware decoder.

Ok, thanks.

No sence installing it in that old system then. I should have an old cd drive here somewhere new enough to read cdrw's I can give her. Just have to look for it and test it.
