i would pad the carton -better safe then sorry !
i remember a story a while back about a trader sending a guy a hard-drive in a carton and he used a pair of underwear as padding -and it arrived D.O.A. and the shipper being a bonehead !
for a your best interest id pack it sure !
ps -who remembers the story and who it was that got that hard-drive ?

Go to the manufacturer's web site and there should be packing instructions for RMAs. Most manufacturers require that there be AT LEAST 4 inches of foam, bubble wrap or styrofoam peanuts all around the drive AND the drive MUST be in an anti-static bag, otherwise they'll void the warranty and refuse the RMA.

Egg Carton Mattress/Pillow at walmart... That's what Maxtor used to send mine back in. But I just went to MailBoxes etc. and paid the extra to have them ship it per maxtor's instructions. Next time I have a problem, I've already got the box and padding they sent it back in. GL eGo

The drive, but the original terms of your HD warranty will stand.. You'll have the remainder of the original 3 years in MOST cases.. You'll need to review their website for more info. Glad the Egg Carton stuff worked for you. I'm sure it was MUCH cheaper than having UPS or MBE do it for you.. eGo

THis is the reason I always do an advanced RMA. (requires a CC) Not only do they ship you a drive first but then you have a box with the correct packing to ship your dead one in. I have never had a problem shipping back in the original carton and packing. If it's good enough to send to me, it's good enough to send back to them.
