Ram speed, IS 3200 worth it over 2100 ddr

Post by canton_kid »

Ok, silly question, but..

Is it really worth the higher price for the faster ram for a basic system?

I see (on price watch) 2100DDR showing at $45 for 512mb while 3200 is $68.

Probably lots of variables like venders involved. But all else being equal, is it worth the extra $23 for the faster speed? I mean you get 3 512mb 2100 sticks for the price of 2 3200!

So for a good high quality system to sell, built stock, not over clocking it, Should I pop the bucks for the faster ram or just go with cheaper stuff? If I should pop for a fast speed stick, about whats the best speed for the money, 2700, 3200?

Also what would be better, 512mb faster ram, or 1 gig slower ram?

These would be AMD systems in the range of XP 1700 up to anything around $100 cpu's.
I do draw the line about $100 for a CPU, unless someone asks for something higher and wants to pay extra.

just make sure you get name brand stuff like crucial, kingston - better chance the memory will run at 6-2-2-2.5 than if you buy from Uncle Enernie's Memory Discounter and lifetime warranty - well worth the few extra bucks

Yep, I would try to stick to the better brands on everything.

I hate those "Why is my new system locking up" type calls, almost as much as "Why doesn't my prnter or modem work, All I did was delete a few files" type calls :)

I was thinking 2100 for a stock build would be ok, but wanted to make sure.

I over buy on my stuff, but then I like to play :)
