i came across a (are you sitting down?) scsi drive array...6 x 18GB 10k rpm ultra wide scsi drive external drive array!

:chug
i will use an adaptec 2940 pci controller...just need to get the scsi cable to connect the bad boy to a box here at home. i haven't decided what to use it for yet...probably just storage, but the speed should be a "bit" faster than my IDE drives.

i was already sitting down.........but dont know why i would want to if I was standing when I read this
I live in the world of IDE and 7200rpm. The words scsi, 10k, and ultra wide have no effect on me

That's a nice little storage box there!! lol.. I myself am trying to make a file server and I'm gonna put a three or four of 80GB Maxtors in it. But I'm not even gonna worry about any of this until I get cable. So plenty of time to save. Nice Stuff though! PICS PICS PICS!! eGo

hey man...nice stuff! did you do a little corporate plundering?
what size APC is that? i snagged a 1425VA ups at the same time as the array...just haven't carried it home yet. it has 2 12v batteries and will run 2 towers for about 2 hours. not bad for the price.

i see you have an external car battery added on....what's the run time on that thing?

ok...minor technical glitch...
i plugged it all in and discovered the power is inadequate in the room i wanted to put it in.
i'll have to figure out where to plug it all in now. hehe
the good news is i noticed i counted wrong---there are 7 drives, not 6. haha

what catches my eye is the hot water radiator that all that stuff is sitting on. Do you use the radiator for cooling purposes?

its an antik

the radiator isnt functional
the car battery is what i replaced the stock battery with
i get about 5 hours if just he pc's are on
i get 1.5 hours if the monitors and raid unit is on
the rackmount apc powers my hubs and dsl

k...i got it up and running. i was quickly let down by its performance!
i don't have a raid controller...only the scsi controller...which may account for some of the performance issues. i had to use software raid in win2000....utilizing the 7 18.2GB 10k rpm drives. Sandra showed the performance at a puny 15,xxx kB/s!!!! my old skool 20gb 5400 rpm ide boot drive gave 18,xxx kB/s. hahaha
soooooo, i switched the drives back to non-raid/standard drives and retested....11,xxx.
ok, so anyone want a good deal on 120GB of scsi drives?

lol u nut!
dont sell them
its your sync speed
u said u used a 2940?
well that only sync's the disc's at 40
go get yourself a dual channel 29160a
seperate the drives in half between the 2 channels
your performance will be off the charts!

that's a 29160 (w/out the 'a')...but the drives themselves are Compaq 18.2GB 10000RPM ULTRA SCSI WIDE 68PIN drives....so upgrading the controller won't speed up the drives if they are only 40MB/s anyway, right?
i'm brand new to SCSI, btw. can ya tell?
