Ever since I have installed WinXP, I have been unable to burn a full CD. I am using an HP 9600 series 12x SCSI burner on my Adaptec 19160 50-pin channel. I am unable to burn cd-to-cd or reading from my cheatah 15k HDD. I am getting buffer underruns every time I try and burn more than a few megs (I can burn small amounts of files successfully, but not large). After the fail, the CDs appear to be functional (i.e. the files and directories are there and they say they are the appropriate size), but none of the files will open. During the last burn, I got the following log file:

I can simulate a burn with Nero and it is 100% succesfull. However, as soon as the actual burning process starts, the buffer goes to 100%, then slowly but surely drops to 0% a little less than half way through (consistently).

I have succesfully burned many CDs using Win2k with this same setup and same media, so I don't believe its a problem with the hardware or media.

I'll be honest and say that I don't know a lot about burning or troubleshooting bruners. Any tips or advice would be appreicated. I wasn't doing anything during this burn process, and here are the system stats:

Tyan Tiger MPX motherboard
2x MP 1600+ at stock
Adaptec 19160
HP 9600 series burner
Toshiba SCSI CDD
Cheatah 15k HDD
Nero 5.5.10.0
XP Pro, fully up-to-date.

Oi, well, I had the same problem.

XP has it's own CD burning stuff which'll interfer with 3rd party software, over at windowsupdate.microsoft.com in the list of (i think, been awhile) recommended updates there's a patch for CD-R functionality. Sorry if Im a bit sketchy on it, but I havent had XP installed for almost a year now so I'm so sure on it.

BTW, how is that Tiger MPX setup working for ya? I was thinking of building 2 similar systems for servers here at home (one Win2k server PDC, one linux all purpose server)

I'd like to help, but I don't run a SCSI system... You may want to rename your post with 'SCSI' in it and try hitting http://www.google.com for more answers...

To disable XP's built in buring crap:
Right click your CDRW's Icon in Explorer. Select Properties/Recording and disable it.

What also might help is adding an ASPI layer. ForceASPI is a good one, and I don't recommend the new 4.71 from Adaptec as I've heard several people having problems with them. ForceASPI will install version 4.61 which works great with XP and Win2k.

XP's built-in burner should not interfere with Nero.

I know of no issues with Nero and XP. EZ CD Creator and XP have major issues.

The issue appears to be related to XP's native drivers for the SCSI card. Found some beta drivers on Adapatec's web site that fixed the problem. While I'm not thrilled about running beta drivers for the card, they haven't caused any problems out of the ordinary yet.

the board itself has been great to me. My only beef is the separate USB card. This was one of the first MP motherboards, back when they were still having problems with the south bridge and USB (which is no longer an issue). The included USB card is something of a pain because eats 2 IRQs and I suspect it has been the source of many of my hardware problems. My issues are with external hardware, not the board.
