trying to fix a pc for a freind,
installed win98se over origional 98 frist off when it wasnt working, cuz no matter what it wouldnt work i tried losa things.

tried a new modem, tried new drivers for both new and old modems, tried ie6.0, tried other modem with ie6, tried uninstalling tcp/ip and reinstalling, tried everything we know of.

any ideas?

pc is a gateway p2-400 64mb pc100, some shitty vid card and sound card, only other card is the modem.

the modem connects to the internet, dials in ok, connects at 48000bps, but it cant display any webpages. through dos it can ping ip addresses, but it cant ping named addresses (i.e. microsoft.com)

any help is appreicated cuz im fresh outta ideas, for the past day or so n e way

Sounds like DNS is screwed up. Did your friend install AOL on this computer by any chance? Classic symptom of an AOL install gone wrong. If so, I've never found a fix - when AOL goes wrong it goes BADLY wrong.

Some suggestions:

- Try uninstalling dialup networking device and re-installing it.

- Make sure there is not a proxy enabled in Internet Connection options.

More than likely it's a problem inherited from the previously screwed up 98 install. Upgrading a screwed up Windows installation is not a good idea - any problems from the old install can be carried over. Only exception to that rule is upgrading to XP from 98 (since it's a complete OS lobotomy there's very little of the old OS that survives to cause problems).

You may need to do a clean install of 98.

unfortunatly AOL was installed in 3 differnt cases, all 3.0 3.3 and 4.0 were installed, though i removed all of them.

we have tried to remove the dialup networking and reinstalled it twice infact, we are trying the proxy thing as u speak....

i have wanted to format the drive all along ! but my friend insists to try everything first

specific error seems to be

windows socket layer seems to be broken,

is there any way to fix without format?? (friend is a pain in the ass)

Have you done a full virus scan? Some viruses corrupt the WSOCK32.DLL file and that will cause the problem you're describing.

heh, actually the virus's were the problem.

i got this computer last week and the first thing i suspected was virus's

3 virus's were infecting more that 18000 files thats right 18000 --- the owner of this wonderful pc has macafee 3, oputta box, no updates since, and thought they were getting protection...

removed all the virus's and thats when the connection problems started.
