Do HD's actually have to be dead to rma them?
Because I have a few older drives that still work fine but are old and slow and nearing the end of there waranty period...
so...do they have to be dead? Or any sugestions on KILLING THEM HAHA hay its the name of the site afterall

I rma' d a hard drive to WD recently and they never even asked the problem. It had a bearing problem whiched caused a very annoying high-pitched whine. Otherwise it worked fine.

I RMA drives all the time. I personally consider it valid to RMA a drive if it's either making a lot of spindle noise, or it has bad sectors.
Some manufacturers don't consider bad sectors a valid reason for an RMA, but they all accept excessive spindle noise as a valid reason.
I've never had a problem RMAing a noisy drive and most drives get noisy after a couple of years if you run them 24/7.

Bro's WD drive just ran out of warranty and is acting up. The mobo would not detect it occasionally and even when recognized, is slow to respond or outright give him a BSOD.
A WD Hd test utility came up with nothing though.
