the sony MZ-S1 model to be exact. i was searching for an mp3 player and could not find one that was cheap/upgradeable enough...so i gave in and went with a minidisc player. the technology is pretty cool....500MB discs...and holds around 5 hours of music. i'll report more once i have it!

I have a NetMD that I like. I use it in the car all the time. It is great on batteries. The software is a pain in the ass but there are ways around it if you look.

Eww sony. I will never buy another sony product. Quality of there car stuff is TERRIBLE! You having good luck with that MD player?

Haven't had any problems with it. The battery seems to last forever. It has sat in the car through swealtering heat and subzero cold and still works like a champ.

i've had the MD player for a few days now and am impressed. the software IS a pain in the butt (i would prefer a simple drag/drop feature to copy mp3's to the MD...), but the quality of the unit is very good. one AA battery lasts forever (well, it's rated for 54 or 56 hours), it's quiet, and the sound quality is great.

I dont really get the point of a MD player in the present day.

i never gave MD's a second look until i went through various mp3 players and was always left wanting more. here is my reasoning:

1. MD players are better bang for the $$$

--one disc holds 500MB of data. up to 5 hours of music on one disc (~$2/disc retail)

2. battery life is longer than mp3 players (at least the ones i've had)

3. multiple file formats are supported (wav, mp3, direct ripping from CD, and a bunch more)+ real-time recording via in input jack (microphone, CD player, DVD player, live radio, whatever)

4. limitless expandability...just use an extra disc or 2.


my problem with mp3 players is that they have not come down in price and many of the brands have now switched to proprietary memory, if they even allow expansion. you pay $100+ for a 128MB player, which is not that many songs.

the Apple iPOD is one of the few that is "better", but it costs 3x as much and has a laptop hard drive in it...if you drop it...it's probably doomed.

i like both technologies, i just think Sony messed up with marketing the MD...it could have been ALOT more popular.

DiscMan? They're pretty cheap nowadays and 10hours worth of MP3s on one disc, or CDA can be done on a RW so it's reussable/rearrangable.. I know it's a little slower, or is it?, but not that expensive anymore and media is WAY cheap now.. About 30 cents a piece for CD-R don't know about RW.. But hey, I wouldn't mind having one (an MD player) just to say I had one.. eGo

size is a consideration for me...i can run/workout with it and it's not too big/heavy. a discman is a bit bulky.

discman are good for mass mp3 playback, however.
