Believe it or not, I'm still using my old Microsoft 3 button wheel mouse that I've had now for 3-4 years. It's starting to show some signs that it might need to be replaced. I would like to go with some kind of optical mouse instead of using a ball mouse.

What are the good mice that will work with games like Half Life, Quake, etc...?

Do most of these use USB or are they still a PS/2 interface?

Wireless?

you still using a ball mouse !?!?!?!

get yourself a good optical mouse. I prefer logitech myself.

They come in USB, but most will come with a usb to ps2 connector

I stay clear from cordless cuase I dont wanna be in the middle of a game and suddenly the batterys die

I like the MS Explorer Mouse. It's an optical 5 button. The 2 buttons on the side can be mapped as any keyboard key. Nice gaming mouse. It's a big mouse but I have big hands so I love it.

I have the logitech MX500 and it's a great gaming mouse, though I still have a slight problem. With mouse accelearation off, it's a tad slow for regular windows browsing so I constantly have to turn it on/off depending on if I'm playing a game or not <img src=http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hipnotic_ ... es/sad.gif> I haven't heard of anybody else who has had this problem though, so maybe I'll ghost my drive and re-install Win2k, maybe somethin's messed up....

[edit]
your best bet is just to go to best buy/CompUSA or similar and feel the mice for yourself. They are all very close in performance now-a-days that it's best to just get one that feels good in your hands.

For my gaming (Quake 3, UT2K3), I use the MS Intellimouse Optical. It has the 5 buttons like the Explorer, but is not as big. It's a USB mouse, but comes with a PS2 adapter.

And another vote for the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
Do most of these use USB or are they still a serial interface?

lol, serial ? It's been quite a while that I used a serial mouse, PS/2 has been the main interface for the last few years, recently replaced by USB ... so I guess you meant PS/2, right ?

LOL, yeah PS/2. I have no idea why I said serial.

Is there any difference between using a PS/2 interface versus usb as for performance?

I've not noticed a single difference and I prefer to use PS/2 to free up USB ports (since there are already dedicated PS/2 ports for the mouse/keyboard) But that is just personal preference.

I *THINK* refresh rate on PS/2 mouse is 80 and USB is 100.

I prefer USB for gaming.

Well, I've been using an Intellimouse Explorer for a few years. Been fine. Just got an MX700 for xmas, haven't had time to use it yet, but I hear it's the best wireless mouse for gaming...I'll give it a try in the next couple of days...

All i know is that the MS Wireless intelli explorer sucks ass for gaming... too much studdering from it and it chews batteries up like there's no tomorrow... i do like the feel of it but MS has some work to do on it still...

with supporting software ps/2 can be set to poll at 200 with a default of 80

USB samples at 125 regardless

oh and executioner you might want to look into trackballs. After using all types of mice over the years I am now a trackball convert.

buy yourself a fingerball and a thumball and return the one you dont like.

MS make excellent trackballs...there's a black thumbball that's very well designed and the explorer silver fingerball that is just the sexiest damn input device I've ever used. I can't imagine sniping or playing a FPS without it now. I still have my mouse on my desk for the rare app where it's the beter choice but when my hand goes to it instead of the trackball it just feels "wrong" somehow....
