Hey Guys, My mom has a DVD player in her computer that she never uses. And I've got a computer to build that I got.. I mean am getting for christmas. And I wanna put it in this computer. Well, I tried putting it in another computer before and couldn't ever get it to work. There's no decoder card for it, nor do I think there needs to be. I could be wrong. I'll be using a Saphire Radeon 9000 in the new computer. I would assume all I need are the drivers for the DVD player which I have on a CD is this correct? I was just curious on some opinions as I could never get it to work for me in the other computer no matter what I tried. Any ideas/thoughts are welcome.. eGo

If the ide cable is key'd the key might be wrong. Try using a different cable. General rule is pin 1 is closest to the power connector (in my experience)
Possible..

I'm sure that's a possibility.. But if memmory serves me correctly I could read regular CD's... I don't remember for sure.. But I will certainly keep that in mind when installing it the next time around.. Thanx Cat..

oh then if u can read regular cd's then i'd assume the drive is fubar. Umm.....do u get an error when trying to read a DVD or does it hang?

I don't think the drive is Fubar though, cause it works in my mom's comp.. heh.. I did think to test it there just in case. I don't really want it to watch the movies on. I want it so I can take advantage of the DVD-ROM features on my DVDs.. You're very welcome for the advice..

If ya ever need a shoulder eGo is here almost 24 hours a day.. lol.. literally.. Ciao!

The only area I remember getting errors was in the DVD application.. It would say it couldn't find the DVD but the computer could read CD's just fine.. Think it was a driver issue? I guess when xmas comes and I get it in the new system we'll see what happens.. I'm gonna compile all of this info I'm getting into a doc. to use when I build my next PC's lol.. eGo

wow thats really wierd. What did it come out of? What brand is it? All I can think is it came out of like a compaq or something and simply wont work out of that machine due to it being stupid

pee-Machine.. heh..

It came out of an eMachine.. But the eMachine, and my Compaq both have the same motherboard, just different CPUs.. the eMachine has a 500 my Compaq has a 666... So I dun know for sure.. lol.. If I can't get it to work, I'm gonna buy a slot load DVD... I'm gonna buy a slot load CD-RW for the new system if I can find one for a decent price too. hehe..

Umm... it I think you guys are missing the point, unless I misunderstand. He put it in another computer and it worked fine as a CD reader, but didn't work as a DVD.
I would assume that he is not aware that you have to install DVD software for it, and whatever came with his Mom's computer is probably proprietary and won't work on that computer.
You'll need to buy a DVD player like PowerDVD, which frankly isn't worth it in your situation. Besides that EMachines drive is not going to be any great drive. DVD drives don't cost much and retail drives come with a player. You can get one for $40 at NewEgg.com
