My cat is fascinated with moving pictures on my monitor and is always up there checking it out.

Well it's happened. Dam, I now have some scratches on my monitor. I can't feel them but can sure see them.

Is there anyway to get the scratches off or is it time for a new monitor?

The scratches aren't on the glass - cat claws are NOT that sharp.

What happened was he scratched off the anti-glare coating.

Nothing you can do about it. Sorry.

if the scratches are annoting, you might be able to mask them by installing an aftermarket glare shield

and get the cat its own monitor !

although it's probably the last thing you would do to a monitor, you can take off the anti glare coating. Chemicals like Windex or other glass cleaning products will eat trhough it. It might make them less visible, but it is destroyign the monitor's anti-glare stuff. It's your call.

My cat really screwed this up. This one cat is just fascinated with the monitor and is always checking it out. Since I first posted, the cat did more scratches. So much that it ruined the viewing for me. I had already figured on buying a new monitor so I figured what the heck.

I got a razor blade and started chiping away at the coating figured I had nothing to lose by trying to remove it since the monitor was already scratched beyond use. I got through a little section and started working it. I finally got the whole coating off, it took me about 2 hours.

I was really surprised how thick the coating is. It came off in pieces and it's so thick you could throw it. About halfway through I figured I was screwed and almost gave up. Well I kept going and now it's done and I must say I did a really good job. I have no scratches on my monitor now at all, none.

Since I have the monitor in a little office I built (no windows) in my garage, I don't notice any glare. Everything worked out OK and now I will have this monitor a little longer. I did have to turn down the brightness a bit. I was very surprised just how dark the coating was. It was like a pair of sunglasses.

PS. Don't try this at home.

Cats can scratch glass. I have a glass shower door and a window with scratch marks on them to prove it. They are faint but you can see them, especialy on the window.

I have heard that Windex eats the anti-glare coating but after actually seeing how thick the coating is, I now have my doubts.

Up to now I thought the coating was just something sprayed on that was just microns thick. This stuff is way way thicker that I would have thought. This stuff is like mylar. You can actually hold a piece and put a crease in it. A piece of it will stand up under its own weight.
