For those who don't know, Gator is a free internet download that memorizes passwords and logo scripts for web pages. It also will automatically enter your credit card and mailing info into forms. It is, however, one big spyware vehicle (and sneaks in some really buggy spyware to boot).

I have some clients (mostly collectors and pawn shops) who rely on it heavily and I found a replacement that's free and has no spyware. The catch is that the pro features only work for 30 days then you need to buy it to keep the pro features - still it does everything Gator does and better without spyware, and if you REALLY need the pro features it's only $29.

I installed it myself to try it out. Since I do website development, I can't begin to tell you how many times a day I have to lookup a password (I have all my client's passwords in text files in a password protected ZIP and I copy & paste). Might keep it if it works out.

You can password lock the program and access to the data so that if someone steals the computer they still can't use your passwords without a master password.

So is this really safe in a windows envirorment?

I might give it a try if you think it's pretty hack proof! I know it would help me out alot if it is truely safe.

I sometimes worry a bit to much probably about secure passwords and accounts, but some companies you realy think are on the ball can be off the wall at times.

I just ordered the 2003 Thomas Register. You would think they would be on the ball!

Order on their secure encrypted server and your safe right. NOT!!

They sent me an e-mail with all info including the full credt card number and billing address. Ya everthing needed to use the card! E-MAIL!!! Not encrypted!! Like duhhh!

Seems to be secure enough. The passwords are encrypted and kept on your computer - not their servers. The software is stand alone and runs on your computer.

I did a lot of research on the newsgroups and found no indication that Roboform installs spyware. It even imports your data from Gator if you still have Gator installed, and then gives you detailed instructions on how to remove Gator AND it's spyware.

I ran Adaware after installing it and it found not spyware.

Gator was never a security risk either - it really does what it claims to do, but it also installs Cydoor spyware (same crap that Kazaa installs which is, admittedly, some of the better behaved spyware out there).
