networking question
networking question
I have remote admin running on my computer which is on a class b network at school and when i go home i leave my computer at school but i want to access the files from my house. my ip is local so i just cant type in the username/ip, so would i have to setup a vpn or something else.

1. Yes you would have to set up some sort of VPN software on the school computer. I use WinVNC and it works pretty well.
2. Does your school's computer have a private or public IP address? In other words if your computer is set to an IP of 1.2.3.4 and youtry to access it from outside the school's LAN, will you be able to get to it? I ask because there will probably some routing issues if your school has a firewall (which if it has half a grain of common sense it will).

Yes its a private ip address and my school does have a firewall.

Then consider remotely managing that PC useless. The firewall will block all incoming ports and won't properly forward the ports unless you have a connection with a network admin or ask nicely to get a port forwarded but chances are your screwed.
