hardware & software video editing stuff

Well, I really want to get back into the scene (though I never really was "in" it to begin with). Only things I've done was with my original AIW 32meg Radeon and their crappy software that they gave you. I'm really wanting to make (don't laugh) a star wars movie with my buds. Choriograph some fight scenes and all, problem is I don't really know where to start when it comes to what sotware/hardware would be best.
I'm more concerned with hardware at this point. I would *think* about getting an AIW 8500 but I'd at this point rather get a stand alone card...I'd assume they could perform better anyway (though maybe more expensive?--christmas is commin' anyway
) Any comments/recommendations are appreciated
