Operateing system is windows 98se. Maxtor 160 GB partitioned in two parts. Motherboard Abit Kx7 333 R.
Problem is when drive is 127 GB full or there abouts i get blue screens saying error cant write to disk. Is there a way around this ? Or i should ask why is it doing this? This is second drive of this size to do this to me so i know it isnt the drive or think i do.

Most onboard controllers don't see over 138 gigs i think it is... might detect the hdd as more but it sounds like that is what your problem is.

Seems to be a limit of the ATA controller specification. I believe there's also a 128Mb limit in Windows 95, 98, and ME.

Some quick research on Google seems to indicate that most good ATA 133 controllers can support partitions over 128Mb, and some newer ATA 66 & 100 designs can as well, but you still need an OS that supports it like Win2K or winXP.

I don't think there's any workaround for the 128Gb limit in Win9x except to split it into two partitions. You'll need something like Partition Magic, but I don't know if it will have a problem with the fact that you've already created a partition larger than 128Mb on the drive. The VTOC or FAT may be corrupt.

I'd backup what you can then try to reduce the about of data on the drive first to give Partition Magic some working room.

No loss on Data as i am only copying my mp3s over to this drive. My mp3s are on three other drives on this computer.
I currently have this drive split 5 partitions we shall see if this works or doesnt. I do have Partition Magic 7 to play with this drive.
Your right Greg this board may not support this size of drive then again it could be the OS problem as well.

I know when I pluged in my 200g hd to my onboard stuff it didnt work right. it reconized it as 200g but could only format it up to 128g or something like that. so I had to use the included ide card on a win2k system.

i was told on another forum to flash the bios to the newest one that it would update my high point drivers so that they would support the 48 bit.


well working on that theory now and hopeing that part is true
