what's a good pc gaming headset buy?

i'm looking into a good headset to try out this "Chat-in-game" or whatever you call it feature for certain half-life mods. btw, has anyone ever tried that feature for mods like CS, Natural Selection, etc.? is there any special software required?
since it's also about time to get a decent headphone (to sneak in some gaming while the wife's asleep
), a headset with good quality sound should do.
budget's around $50-100. should that be enough?
