electrical smell

I have this new gadget. It's by Vantec and it has 3 sensors that connect to various parts (hdd, cpu, case temp) and register on an LCD display that has a backlight (an LED I suppose). It also has 2 USB connections and a firewire connection and will regulate hsf fan speed. Fits nicely in a 5 1/2 bay.

I'm not sure if I have a problem, but when I plugged it into the PSU for the first time I noticed a bit of an electrical smell. I got nervous and unplugged it. The odor was coming from the backlit area but from nowhere else. I pulled out an old computer and tried it there. Same smell but I let it run for a couple of hours. No fire :7
and no smoke. Everything worked fine. The smell was less after an hour but then leveled off. I unplugged the device about an hour ago and it still has the same smell sitting on my table.

Could this be just a break-in smell (he says with optimism), some kind of plastic coating burning off? Any thoughts?

I've goten a couple epox motherboard that smelled burned up before. If its working fine just give it a good visual inspection and use it. Sometimes electronics will have a funky odor when u first start using them.

"Is that the Vantec Nexus device? How ya like it?"

I had to ask for a new one, it WAS defective. Now that it works, it'd a terriffic add on. It has 3 choices of faceplate, and if you don't choose any faceplate it matches my Lian-li case perfectly. It has 2 USB 2.0 connections, 1 firewire connection, a CPU fan control and 3 temp sensors.
