started getting intermittent bsod/beginning memory dump after very slow boots with about 5 min of disk action with no proggies running - ran antiviurs, adaware.spybot, etc.

finally got a message about nt something kernel missing or bad and now it will boot but goes directly into memory dump as soon as i log in to computer - the hdd action has been there for about a week - it is about 3 yr old wd 18 gig i think - i played bf 1942 for about 5 hrs tues - ???

any ideas welcomed - right now i can't get in at all - wont go to last good config - which was when i relaoded 2k about 2 weeks ago - i've been meaning to replace this hd for a while becuz its too small but wanted to do it on my time :(

any ideas welcomed

Go to Western Digital's site and download their diagnostic utility. Run it to see if the drive is indeed dead or dying.

Sometimes (if you get lucky) the utility can fix the drive.

In order to fix Windows (I assume this is a WinXP system?) you'll probably have to boot from the XP CD and do a Repair.

it's a 2k system - i'll get the util from wd and try it tonight - temps were ok - i was having occasional trouble with f@h whenever i got one of the super cores which stress the heck out of the cpu which was oc'd to 133 - the only thing that i noticed was the excessive disk running

sounds more like a memory problem. it eiother can't handle the bus speed(overclocked) or it needs more voltage to it.

Sounds similar to what was happening to my older WD HD. I used the WD util and it found bad sectors that it repaired, but the HD kep giving me problems, I was getting BSOD's all the time and corrupted registries. Finally I said screw it with the hassle and bought a new HD and no more problems...

it was running stable at 133 and 142 fsb for several months prior to the latest problem

i got it to boot in safe mode this morning, scheduled a full scan disk and rebooted as i left for work, we'll see if that helps. If i can get it semi stable i'll ghost it to a new drive tonight or tomorrow -

now it's smooth as silk

i did the full scandisk, then reset the bios to defaults and changed what i needed to change and this thing is running perfectly - played an hout of bf1942 online last night at 133 fsb and nary an issue- folding now for 12 hours - no prob at 133 fsb

i hate it when computers get ghosts !

haha spoke too soon - complete crash - nuttin' - tried to rehad it using 2k floppy set - they wont boot - finally gave up pulled the hd, put in a spankin' new 80 gig maxtor - and spent about 2 hours trying to get any OS to install - got to the reboot "run windows for the first time in 98" but it hung - woulddn't come up on reboot - reparttioned, reformatted, can even get 98 to install or win2k boot disks to run - keep getting error messages - different ones each time :) - 2k boot disks and 98 install stuff seems to run fine on the other puter i tried - maybe a bad mobo or cpu here - anyway getting tired of fooling with it - that mobo is c oming out - i have a ecs mobo and a 1600+ around here somewhere - tired of fooling with this system - i rma'd one mobo already from this system - i like haveing the 2.2 ghz but i'd rather have a stable 1.5 or so

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm probably goin' back :)

anyway sitting here copying all the stuff on the 4 hd partitions from the p4 onto my extra "good" machine - a 1800xp with an 8500 and 512 pc3000 ;)

when i get the time i'll try and fool with the other one - re[place cables, reset everything, but like most folks i don't have the time to rebuild the dang thing every 30-60 days

i'm beginning to think that my days of overclocking are about done - the new machines are fast enough to do about anything at a reasonable speed and the new programs (even the fah3 fast core) seem to be stressing the machines to the point where the ol' overclocked machine is on really stable for benches and not full out gaming, etc. seems like the newer games, (bf 1942 is the only one i'm doing) put a lot of stress on various compnents and any out of spec equipment ends up causing a problem - maybe there is so much data flowing through the system now at such a high rate that overclocking has reached the pint of diminshing returns - when i want to sit down a surf or play a couple of hours of bf1942, i do not want a bsod because i've squeezed and extra 400 mhz out of the system

onward and upward!
