Well my toshiba 5105 has been shutting programs down do to "Encountered Errors" So I want 2k on this bad boy. Will I get compatibility issues or anything? It has XP right now..I dont even know how to get into the bios lol. Help me out please guys thanks. Its only a month old too.

BACK UP EVERY THING FIRST

then try to install it on the booting os

I assume the lappy was working fine from the factory? If not then installing Win2K probably won't help. A new laptop should be crashing right out of the box.

If the store will still exchange it I'd do that, otherwise contact Toshiba and get the unit RMA'd.

If it's only a month old why are even considering putting another OS in it? For one thing you won't get any warranty support if you change OSes (if that matters to you).

You can't "upgrade" XP to 2K, so you're going to have to do a clean install.

If you're doing a clean install anyway, and if you have a system restore CD then why not just restore it back to the factory setup (backup your data first!!) and try that.

I'm no big fan of XP, but it works fine. Why don't you try to troubleshoot XP? If you're having stablility issues it's nothing that's XP specific. XP is a rock now.

First of all XP by default (2K also) shuts down when it encounters a serious error. Very annoying. Right click my computer->properties->advanced->starup and recovery. Under system failure uncheck "automatically reboot".

With this disabled you might now get an error message when the problem occurs that gives you some indication of what's causing it.

Go through your background apps in the startup tab of MSCONFIG and disable anything that's not necessary.

Run Adaware and remove any Spyware.

Do you have a virus scanner installed? Is it working and up to date?

Its more than likely an app or something you've instaleld causing problems... XP is the most stable OS i've used to date... Won't find anything but it on my PC's Do what FP said and that will stop the shut down problem.

no it was IE that would ALWAYS close. that and realplayer. I like 2k better anyways. I just threw it on and havent had a problem. It did come with a restore CD but like I said I prefer 2k so I put that on. It does work good now. I just had to download a million drivers from the toshiba website. I mean when I first bought it I had intentions of just putting 2k on anyways but I decided to give XP a chance. Doesnt have the security settings i've grown to love in 2k. Thats really the biggest reason. People around my house like to fuck with things and there is no in the middle settings in XP. Its either limited or administrator. No power users. Oh well, Its working good now. Thanks guys. And if it starts giving me problems again I will use the restore CD and send it back to toshiba.

ya cause its probably XP Home for idiot users... Try out Pro and it blows Win2k out of the water... Win2k is so slow compared to XP its like night and day...

Pred I agree with you except for this statement. That's a crock. XP is nothing but 2K with some improvements and a pretty GUI. Performance is the same (some would argue though that XP is a tad slower since it has all the bells and whistles thrown on, but it's not anything you'd notice).

Pred's right Caterpillar - XP Pro has all the same security features as 2K. In the home version you only have "simple" networking and security available. Essentially everyone on an XP Home system is an Administrator, just some have limited abilities.

But if you've got 2K running alright you'll be happier with that, especially it you're like me and don't like the XP desktop. I prefer 2K only because once I go to all the trouble of disabling everything I dislike in XP, I essentially have a Win2K desktop running. Rather have the real McCoy without the code bloat.

exactly. But FP i dont agree with the security settings in pro. I did use a copy of pro and I noticed it was the same as the home version. Didnt really seem any different aside from logos. The security settings were the same "Administrator" or "Limited Account". I dunno if there is a different area to change this?

Pro defaults to "Simple" security. You have to enable normal security. Actually that's a nice feature since setting up security on an NT based system is really challenging for the non-techie.

Hmm... according to this link it works with XPHome too, I'll have to look into that.

Oh well wish I knew that when I had XP Pro on my desktop. Oh well. That was really my only gripe with XP.

FP i'm talking mostly boot time for XP... I've ran all version of Win2k and they all boot slower than hell. I can hit the button on my computer and 24 seconds later i'm on the desktop. I timed it once cause i couldn't believe how fast it booted.... 2k takes at least 1.5-2 min to load.

PRED: Oh I agree. Dunno what they do in XP that makes a difference but Win2K IS slow to boot by comparison.

Doesn't bother me though - my system is on 24/7 and I only reboot when a software install requires it or if I have to put a client's HDD in the drive tray to Ghost it.

I know 2K is fussy about the NIC though. My 2K workstation takes twice as long to boot if the NIC is in one slot versus another. No other difference and no IRQ sharing problem, just slower to configure for one than the other.

Does it have anything to do with the fact that it doesn't rely on DOS to load the windows platform? Or is DOS still there? Just a thought.. eGo
