cpu just climbed to 39¤C in 120 seconds

Well...
my fan has failed with the motherboards power supply for it, right now its just hooked up to the power supply cables, but what caused this and how long can it last like this
btw it back down to 34 but thats still too hot

high rpm fans draw too much current from the motherboard fan headers and burn them out - sounds like you've made the appropriate switch to another power source
39 C is really nothing to worry about - 45+ is getting into fix it real quick territory, and 55+ is getting into power off NOW territory - all depends on the cpu

and didn't have much knolage into this stuff...
although i have had my same hsf for a year

cpu fans dying is scary stuff...
i don't think any damage would be done (cpu or motherboard) until 70C+...the cpu's are rated to 85C or 90C i think...i would guess the motherboards would fail first?
my 1.4 non-XP athlon runs at 43-44C idle and 50C full load (UT2003) w/ a system temp of 29C...it never goes much lower even with higher rpm fans...but has always been stable.

Same as b-man1. The only time I would start getting worried is above 60c. Anything above 60 (imo) is running too hot. Mine typically runs around 45-50.

it's the age-old discussion of cpu temps...and also how they are measured. the problem is that each motherboard measures them a bit different...and the sensors are closer/farther away on different setups....so the same cpu may register much differently on each rig.
