Was just thinkin' tonight(can't ya smell the smoke), how come we haven't seen a DVD-ROM faster than 16x... I haven't noticed one faster than that. Did they just think that 16x was plenty fast or is that a way to keep us from ripping them faster :D Just curious is all to see if any of you know as to why 2 years ago they topped out at 16x and haven't went any further.

It's top secret. Most people have an "out of body" experience after 16x. :D :p

could be a limitation on how fast DVDs can be read. keep in mind that the "x" rating for DVD is not the same as for CD. The base ("1x") transfer rate for DVD is 1375 kB/s, so 16x DVD reads are 22000 kB/s. CD-ROM, on the other hand, has a base transfer rate of 150 kB/s, and 52x is 7800 kB/s.

I realize that Jim, it must be a limitation of the DVD or the drives not being able to read faster...
