A friend want's a new puter. And want a P4.

How di they oc? How do u do it? (stupid question but iv'e been out of the intel stuff some time now)

How does Celery do compared to P4 or AthlonXP??

p4s are multiplier locked, so you overclock by increasing the fsb

only the northwoods (512 cache) are decent overclockers

the best bang for the buck is still the 1.6a which are 100 fsb chips - with a decent mobo, you will get a minimum of an oc to 133 fsb. many people get 150 = 2.4 ghz

for the best oc boards, take a look at the cpu database at http://www.overclockers.com and see what they are using

not sure about the celerys, but as long as you are dealing with a 100 fsb, there is overclocking headroom

1 have a 1.6a @2.25 on a msi 645 ultra C using pc 2100 - it runs at 2.4 but is not stable. the highest voltage i can get on this mobo is 1.55

What chipset...SiS with DDR?? Is it any good?

it's the sis 645 ddr chiset, which i think has been replaced with the 645xx or the 648 - it's basically a budget board with limited oc'ing stuff and ac97 sound - but it's only $65 us - I can live with a $65 mobo and a $160 cpu for a 2.25ghz rig

celerons are still ASSY compared to the full fledged cpu just like the old days.

For just a few bucks more 133 FSB is a 90.5% given (2.4GHz) and quite possibly 150FSB for 2.85GHz!

My secondary setup is now using the 1.8a @ 150FSB with only .25 more vcore

Very easy overclock using the factory HS, Fan and Thermal.

I am using the same mobo as you are, but I am using XMS3200C2 Ram

SiS64x boards aren't budget boards, they just happen to be cheaper than the competition, I assure you that if you bought yourself a nice Abit, Asus, or MSI SiS 645DX/648 board your o/c performance would be more than satisfactory.

morphius - what kind of fsb overclock do you get with that ram? i was running some pc3000 and i was getting ~155 on a 4/5 about 188 on the ram but couldn't get it stable - i put the good ram in the amd rig and the pc21oo in this one which is my main rig - also - did you put active cooling on the mainboard chipset?

I have a small 486 fan on the chipset. I have not even tried anything higher than the 150 as this is on my secondary rig. My main rig has a 2.53GHz @ 2.85GHz using Samsung PC2700 which I will end up upgrading very very soon to a 2.66GHz or 2.8GHz @ 3.XXGHz with XMS3500, will probably spring for the CPU and RAM in the next week or two.

I just laid down some cash for a 9700 which I'll be getting either today or tomorrow

be sure to shoot us some benches when you get the 9700 if your monitor doesn't explode
