Recently I ordered DSL from Pacbell for my home, I've had it for a year in my other apartment.
Now they are affliated with Yahoo and the package include whold bunch of yahoo crap which I really dont need.
Is there a way to connect to the server without using its own crappy software? like some basic window proggy..?

One more thing.. like a year ago, I've had Northpoint for a few months but later they went bankrupted.
The technician installed a new jack near my computer (the phone jack is far away from my rig). Now I'm doing self install cuz it's free. But just wondering if I could continue to use the jack for Northpoint for my Pacbell line? I've tested it with a phone, there isn't any dialing tone on that one though. Not sure if it's compatible with Pacbell's network.

If it's standard DSL it probably uses PPPOE. If it's an XP system it has a PPPOE client already built-in. Otherwise you could just install the EnterNet 300 client (do a search on Google for it - it's a free download).

Better yet, get a Linksys DSL Router from Office Depot (I think they're down to $55 right now) and just use that. Less hassle. It will manage the PPPOE connection automatically, and you won't have to worry about logging on (router does it automatically). You won't need to do anything special on the server - just configure TCP/IP on the NIC conencted to the router to "obtain the IP address from the server" and DHCP will take care of it automatically.

As for the jack, DSL must be installed on a WORKING telephone line. When you ordered you should have given them the phone number to put it on. If the old DSL connection is still connected to the phone line then it should work fine.

You may not hear anything on that line if you connect a phone to it. Some DSL jacks are wired backwards (yellow and black pair). Also you might not hear anything through the filter. You'll just have to try connecting the modem to it and see if it detects a carrier.

yea.. I'm thinking about getting a router as well.. so I could share the line with my lappy..

today I got the line setup, but it still gives me hecka of headache..
it's advertised as 384k-1.5m/128k, but my speed test result gives me ONLY 284/106!
I don't really mind the up but 284 down is such a pain ! I've had dsl twice and never had such slow downstream. I tried to do some tweak from dslreport.com but it won't work..
and I think it's not because of the distance from CO cuz last time I had a nice gentle 1.5m down with Northpoint..

I'm already desperate with this SBC crap.. :(
