Dead Mobo - Battery?

Is the battery essential to a motherboard?

I had an old p200 stored in a closet and wanted to spruce it up and give it to my friend's little sister.
Its old, but it was definitely working when i put it away about 6 months ago. now it doesnt post any more. i stripped everything down to CPU/RAM/PCI Vid card, but no mobo beeps, the cpu fan spins up.

I remember before I put it away that the computer clock kept on losing time, and I'm pretty sure the little watch battery (CR2032) is dead. Would that be the cause of the mobo not posting?

other things i did: was swap out ram with another stick, clear cmos, check for possible mobo shorts via the case.

Thanks

If it was losing the time, yeah the battery's probbaly dead.

Cheap enough to find out. That battery's around $2 at any Radio Shack or Office Depot.

WHOA. you have gotta be kidding me.

just for kicks, i swapped out a battery from my hallway computer "just to see".

and BEEP!

thats the best sound to hear after a frustrating week of swapping out parts.

Thanks for the quick response.
