Ultramon slowing down my video?

Post by FlyingPenguin »

Yup, looks like it.

In order to troubleshoot an occasional BSOD problem I've uninstalled Ultramon2. Suddenly my second display is working CONSIDERABLY faster than it used to.

I've been tolerating slow performance on the 2nd display (Savage4 PCI) because I assumed it was the card or flaky Win2K drivers (it's hard to find good drivers for it - I went through several until I found one that worked - using a Creative driver even though it's not a Creative card).

I'd notice BIG TIME LAG moving my Winamp player around the desktop of the 2nd display but with Ultramon disabled it's silky smooth now.

Much as I like a few of Ultramon's features, I like the performance better, and I'm a firm believer that the less you run in the background the better, so I think it's staying off.

Ultramon seems to have some issues with my sound drivers in W2K as well. I've dumped it as well and my work pc is nowhere as fast as yours FP. :(

FP, you sure it's Ultramon thats slowing down the performance on the 2nd display? I have basicaly the same hardware setup as you with the expeption of the vid card (radeon 7500 dual head) and don't have any performance problems on either display(also using ultramon). Maybe it's a combo of the savage and flakey drivers along with ultamon. Like you I'd ditch ultramon if it meant speeding things up. However I really like the features it offers. maybe a dual head card is in order for you. :)

Dual head is out, but eventually I'll probably get a Geforce MX for the second display.

Yeah it could be a problem with Ultramon and the Savage drivers. However, I'm also finding that short of the full span wallpaper, I don't much miss Ultramon.

I'm back on my "less is best" kick this month, and I do like a clean system with as little as possible running in the background.

I even tried playing with NVidia's NView utility, but that didn't do much for me either.
