Ad-aware Question

I began too suspect a lot bs BS going on with old rusty but trusty 450 P3 general use computer I keep in the living room for anyone to use and I think everone has. :kookoo
The poor thing has been thru almost 4 years of abuse without a format, yet it lives. I do have a virus scanner running and a firewall but never gave much thought to 'spyware and adware that I've read about here.
So I'm thinkin whats that freebie site? Counldn't remember so I did a search and came up with a trial version of sunbelts "pest control".
Yeah.. It finds all the stuff but wont fix until you pay.. Bastages!. I wrote em a nasty letter too and told them they might want to change there tactics to attract cusomers. I would have glady paid IF I were to evaluate the product. For all I know THEY put the stuff there in the 5 meg exe download. Heh..
Screw them. I should have came here first. did a search HERE and with little fuss came up with a name I was looking for all along. Ad-aware. It did a scan and came up with 232 instances of nasties ranging from Gator to brilliantdidgi somthing to sex tracker. I didn't know I was a sex tracker..

I had to check every box to rid the beasts (232 times as I counld find a select all) and it did its thing.

Just wondering if there anything I should know about this great free program. Id test futher but my son in law knocked on the door and took over looking up fantisay football stuff and I'm booted off to another another comp. (the good one!) Is 232 a lot?, and is that a major infestation?

I haven't heard him yelling out there so things must be OK

A lot of those were probably cookies, but over the years they can add up. You might want to get the reference update for it from the site. Oh, and instead of clicking 232 times(!), all you had to do was right click and a pop-up menu allows you to select all.

I know, there should be a button tho...

The reference updater program for Adaware can be a bit confuding to setup. For some reason it downlaods the updates tot he wrong folder. First time you run the updater, use the preferences to change the download folder to the adaware program folder.

Then click connect and it'll download the update and it'll mention the date of the update.

Run adaware and in the status bar in the bottom left part of the window it should indicate the reference file date. Make sure it matches the date of the one you just downloaded.

Tunis you were right about selecting. Thanks a ton. It actually caught two more and was able to knock em down with a 'few clicks'.... The good news is that the doctors firgure my 'primary mouse botton' finger is going to be OK.

I THINK I have this setup correctly now after reading FP's post . I'll fumble a bit no dout, and I aint used to this left handed mouse the doc gave me... J/K

232 might be the record

most i've ever found on a pc was at work - about 38

problem with those thingies is that a lot of them phone home for new ads and other err.. stuffs .. on a regular basis

apparently from what i've read there's an ongoing high level suel betw adaware and the spyware designers

Oh I had a client's system with over 250 items Adaware detected. The average has been around 50.
