Epox 7KXA and Geforce2 GTS POST problems.

Anyone ever see this before: If the computer is turned off over night, next morning it won't POST and give a beep error indicating it can't detect the video card. Turn the power off and back on again and it boots fine.

I found a couple of references about this in Google newsgroups - seems to only happen with GF2 GTS cards on this mobo.

I can live with it (it's my LAN party system) but wanted to know if anyone had come across this before and if they ever found a fix.

I own two 7KXA boards but nVidia isn't allowed in my house. Currently one has a Voodoo5 5500 AGP and the other has a Voodoo3 2000 AGP. Never had a problem with either one. :)

Eventually it'll wind up with my GF3 Ti200 in there when I upgrade my main system.

No big deal, it ALWAYS POSTs on the second try, just strange.

I love the board though. I dare say that it runs faster with an Athlon 900 than my old P3-1000 Intel BX system did. Great LAN party rig.

Yes it is a good Slot A board. Not much of an overclocker but I have a GFD sitting here for the 750 or I'll hard mod it if the old eyeballs are up to it. :D

Yeah I'm on my second 7KXA. My first did something very similar. It would not post until i hit the reset button. It did it religiously. Until eventually it wouldnt post at all. I found a blown circuit on it afterwords. It sounds like the board is on its way out. Although ur situation may be different because I didnt get any beep codes. Thought it was a dead processor till I replaced it and it still didnt work. It was the board.

I've done a little research.

Here's a detailed explanation of the problem, what mobos are prone to it, and it's cause. Interesting read: http://www.geocities.com/bwg1974/

Why not NascarFool?

Well no big deal, even though it's reliably POSTing on the second try I decided to put the Asus P3B-F mobo w/P3-1000 in the LAN party rig instead since that has no issues with Geforce cards.

The Athlon 900 system will get sold off.

If Image wouldn't have destoyed Image , You can bet your bottom dollar that Image would probably be #1 in graphics cards/chips. I have two opinions : 1. nVidia is trying to monopolize the graphics chip industry and 2. If someone offered me $70,000,000.00 , I woulda sold out too. :D

I've never liked Nvidia cards... i'm still pissed that 3dfx sold out to those pack of Nvidiots... I'm with Nas i think 3dfx would be king if they were still around... Even though i gotta admit ATI has been giving nvidia a run for its money the last couple years.

3dfx killed themselves. Voodoo3 was old-tech, little more than a speeded-up banshee. VSA-100 was late, no match for the Geforce2, and their follow-up (Rampage) was likely to be late as well. 3dfx also spent unwisely, buying STB and Gigapixel. Blaming nvidia for 3dfx's demise is foolish.

the 9700 is calling you, FP. Can't you hear it? "Buy meeeee..... I want to play with your Athlonnnnnn, FP!."

News flash: 3dfx destroyed 3dfx. 3dfx made many bad decisions which led to their unfortunate demise. Concentrating on 10% of the videocard market {the retail market} and not pursuing various segments of the videocard market like OEM was unwise. Releasing late products that weren't as feature rich and slower than the competition didn't help. Acquiring Gigapixel at a time when 3dfx was losing money was dumb. Relying on a proprietary API for too long. Redesign after redesign of products while releasing filler products like the Voodoo's 3 and 5. And on and on it goes...

The world didn't end when 3dfx died. 3dfx was just another casualty in the videocard wars and this happened to many other companies {see list below}.

Yep, the remains of 3dfx were bought in a firesale cause noone else wanted them. ATI sure didn't because they just bought ArtX earlier that year. By the way, ArtX are the people who did the flipper graphics chip for Nintendo's Gamecube and now the impressive Radeon 9700. If 3dfx was so good how come anyone didn't lend them money to continue on? Its cause 3dfx for many quarters was bleeding red ink all over the place and that was going to continue. Even bigtime 3dfx supporters like John Reynolds say Rampage wouldn't have saved 3dfx.

You better get pissed at ATI too. After all, ATI soaked up OEM money also. Then ATI had the audacity to release the Radeon. What were they thinking? They released the most feature rich and fastest {for a short time} videocard of that generation. Damn you ATI, damn you to videocard hell. :D

Looks like you can't have an ATI card in your house either. Oh well at least there will be consoles to fall back on. Can't get the XBox since that uses Nvidia chips. Can't buy the Gamecube either since that uses an ATI chip. Sony is another big corporation but due to its PR it doesn't get slammed like Microsoft.

You expect a company to compete in a tough market with one hand behind its back because its not your favorite company? Image

Monopoly bsolopy. ATI has dominated the mobility graphics market for years now. And guess who dominates the integrated graphics market? Intel. o_O

The videocard market had wayyy too many players in it. What was the result? Consolidation happened, companies withdrew from the graphics market, while others were bought or went bankrupted. Fact is this is a tough market to be in. Don't think so? Look at the body count amigo.

And expect the same to continue in the future. >_> Matrox

If you wish to limit your videocard choices, go for it. But hopefully the above information will persuade you to see things in a new light. :)

Just as in years past, I'm going to continue to recommend videocards for a persons needs and budget.

You are right! 3dfx should have been allowed to go bankrupted, all its ip go up for sale for chump change and all those engineers get laid off. A good move when the economy was starting to tank.
