Anyone around here taken the stock cooler off their 8500 and replaced it. I notice they are epoxied on... Just wondering how hard it would be to remove it and put on a different cooler. I can't OC this card much and i think its because the stock cooling well simply sucks on it. That and i have a chipset fan to do a review on and no way in hell i'm pulling off the cool looking Iwill Fan on my xp333

Dunno if you can, but a flat head screwdriver would probably make pretty short work of it. Those thinks usually aren't epoxied on very well at all.

toss in in the freezer for about 20-30 min in a baggy. then do the flat head screwdriver thing....try and place a chargecard under it so it doesnt scratch the card. its pretty easy eithor way.

Freezer would take to long i have access to liquid nitrogen lol knowing my luck i'd freeze the card and drop it and watch it shatter into tiny little pieces...

I was thinkin' about using a razor blade... We have some real wide ones at work just slice under it and through the epoxy. Once its off whats a good cleaner to use to get the left over epoxy off??

rasorblade probably wont work that well. I use goof off...but its hard to find and it stinks.

Hell, if it's epoxy slap a torch to it. That sucker should pop right off. Lot of help, ain't I?

We've got some nasty stuff at work that i think would take it off... only thing i'm worried about is if it would take the protective layer off of the PCB as well... It does wonders to your hands if it gets on them... lol

Can't you buy that stuff from a welding shop? I read about people using it for amateur astronomy and heat sink experiments.

How long will it keep in a thermos?

Hey FP.... Thats where we get ours is at a welding supply store... And yes it does wonders to warts... hehe i had a couple on my hands grabbed a q tip out of the first aid kit and took care of them. One of my co workers about flipped when he seen me do it... Don't hurt just stings a little is all. Dry ice will also do the trick. The smallest we can get it in is a 5 gallon container. Exposed to the air 5 gallons will only last a few hours. In a air tight thermos it should hold for a long time. We normally get it in a 25 gallon tank. I've went through a full tank in a day it don't last long at all in the air. We shrink these one parts down with it. After their froze they get dropped into this hole and when they heat up to room temp it creates a .008 press fit on the part. Only way to get it out is to cut it. I put 12 of those parts in a 54 quart cooler and it takes about 10-15 gallons to fill the cooler up half way depending on room temp. The hotter it is the faster it evaporates. One day we got done the cooler had 4 inches of it in the bottom and it was gonna go to waste anyways cause we can't ptu it back in the tank. Tank is pressurized. So we dumped it out on the floor. That was the most cool thing i have ever seen in my life. There was this fog about a ft off the floor and it just kept spreading till all the liquid evaporated. We covered the whole area of our shop in the fog and about half way into the other part of the shop. It did bring the room temp down a couple degree's too... lol

Just on a side not plastic does not hold up long at all so if you do get some. Put it in a metal thermos if you can. Plastic dries out pretty bad and cracks. We have to buy a new cooler every year cause by the time we're done with it at the end of the season its shot...

i didnt like the idea of putting my card in the freezer so I went the opposite route....

I oced the core as high as I could stably, ran 5 3dmark2k1 loops, then quickly popped the card out...i slid the flap from a carton of butts under the hsf and it came off easy as pie with a flathead

then to get the epoxy off I scraped what I could with a razor, then used 400 grit sandpaper, and while I was there I lapped the core some more
