I have a WDC 20gig that I got from a friend, he said "it might be bad". Anyways, I hooked it up and when I powered up the system the hard drive makes a loud "BEEEEOOOOooooo.................................................BEEEEEEEEEOOOOOoooooooooo..................." and isnt detected by the bios no matter what jumper setting or cable position I use. What is that sound from, almost sounds like some kind of alarm or seiren, but from a h.d.d.? Maybe its the head screeching against the platters or something. Its still under waranty, but the bottom left corner of the label is torn, think WD will care? The upc and S.N. are intact, but the rma policy seems to not like torn labels.

Sonds like the motor is gone... as far as the corner torn I think that should be ok. It kinda obvious if you take a label off an put it on another drive.

Just had a client's do the same thing. It's a goner. It's seizing up.

You MIGHT be able to tap it with a rubber mallet and make it work long enough to copy your stuff off it, but it's a crap shoot.

Go to the manufacturer's web site and check the warranty - see if it's still covered.

Yeah, I think it is dead. I put my ear to it to see if it was spinning and hear it make a tic tic tic sound after every screech. RMA time. Thanks guys-
