need some help, win2k doesnt boot after installing a cd-rw

Post by FuNPoLiCe001 »

okay, so my friend's complaining that her CD-RW sucks, so i picked up a new one for her and put it in today. We were late for dinner though so I didn't have time to check the install, but the bios and win2k seemed to see it just fine although nero and ez cd creator 5 platnium wouldn't see it.

so she gets home and tries to use the writer, but the software doesn't recognize it. I tell her to reinstall nero or ez cd creator, which should fix the problem. Since the drive comes with a copy of EZ cd creator 5 basic, she uninstalls the platnium and plans to install the basic. Actually, she didn't tell me if she installed basic, but i m assuming she didn't

but anyways, she uninstalled platnium, and now win2k won't boot. It gives her stuff about corrupted disk, possible virus, run scandisk or chkdisk etc. I tell her to unplug the CD-RW and try booting like that, still no go. Try it with safe mode, still no good.

So did EZ cd creator just fuxor her system or is there something else here?

did it come with that GoBack utility? I recall that older versions of GoBack had a problem with fuX0ring Windows 2000 NTFS partitions.

TakeTwo had a problem with Win2k and messing things up. Roxio does have a fix for it now. It's in version 5.1 and as always it is best to upgrade to support newer CD-RW drives. From the sounds of what happened is that she installed EZCD 5 with TakeTwo and rebooted before updating. That is what caused the problem. http://support.roxio.com/roxio_support/ ... esv5.jhtml is the Updates download page. A repair or reinstall of Win2k might be necessary but you could still save it, I don't know how though because I never install TakeTwo nor any other "includes" in EZCD5 (no need for em).

What about F8 and selecting "Last known good" ? As long as she was unable to logon after the system fux0red up it should work ....

Yeah, Older versions of EZ CD Creator would trash Win2K - I remember reading a warning on Roxio's site that you should NOT uninstall it or it could be disasterous - they instead recommend installing a patch first.

You can check Roxio's site for info.

Also do a check of Google's newsgroups and see what others have done when this happened.

You can try booting the Win2K CD and doing a repair BUT this will only work if you made a repair disk - preferrably recently, and few people (unfortunately) bother to.

BTW: The CD probably didn't work because it's too new. Older CD-R software is constantly left behind buy newer hardware. I had to upgrade Nero when I bought my last CD-RW drive.

alright, thanks guys

i've done some poking around and i think that it'll work if i just install win2k over the current using the repair option after i choose install...

i just have to get all the drivers back after that...wish me luck
