Since you are all "Computer Geeks" (and I mean no disrespect), I was wondering what everyone thinks of this.

Thats the basics of what I have put together. Another option is a PC with an AMD Athlon 2200

What do you all think?

Works for me as long as it is a good mobo and HD. Oh yeah, and is comparable pricewise to building it yourself.

Yea both the motherboard, and the harddrive are of highquality, also I forgot to mention I am getting a 550w powersupply.

This system will be for everyday net, and school shit. But also for Ultra High Performance Gamin (hopefully...), and Programs such as Pinnacle7, Bryce, 3d Studio Max, Mixmiester, Photoshop, and for other intesive programmin, and compilin

You might can get by with something as piddly as that.

But all that isn't cheap is it. Have you tried comparing the price if you built that yourself?

Well in the world of computers lest just saw im much more software based than hardware. Its funny I know the ins and outs, I run linux, i write, yet I havent the slightest idea on how to build one. Im sure I could, and I have some knowledge on where to begin.

Also the warrenty, service, etc. Plus there is a lot of software bundled in that I especially have an intrest in.

Why RDRAM? RDRAM is over-priced and doesn't preform all that much better than PC3000 DDR memory. I'd say go Athlon and save some money. Is it the 120GB WD SE drive? If not then a single drive isn't worth it, IMO, dual 60GB drives in a RAID0 would give better preformance than a single drive, generally. Have you priced it out by building it yourself and then compared to Alienware prices?

Given the specs you gave I priced a similar system (not really complete) at newegg.com for $3600. I went and customized one at Alienware (same specs you gave) and it came out at nearly $4800. That's $1200 difference that you could save. And you could save more by stepping down to DDR RAM (drops Alienware down to $4400) and even more than that if you go Athlon. An Athlon Alienware system w/ similar specs is only $4000, and will probably preform almost at the same level as the P4 system. A similarly priced out Athlon system (again at newegg.com) runs at $2900.

One thing I noticed was the 2.54 Ghz P4 system doesn't work with RDRAM, according to newegg, maybe it's wrong though, dunno.

I wouldnt really sugest a WD hard drive as it is...Maxtor's are better.

System seems really nice...but Thats ALOT of bank to WAIST when you can save so much buildign the same thing your self.

yeah but if he doesn't know how to build it and doesn't want to risk screwing something up it might be worth the peace of mind esepcially with the warranty. it took me a lot of courage before i decided to spend a grand on my first homebrew pc and i was VERRRRY nervous mounting the heatsink clip as i look back on it

if he is going with the P4 then the heatsink isnt somethign he really has to worry about.

Yea I would try and build it myself but I just dont have the time, plus I want the piece of mine that this thing is going to work when I need it to work for me, and the addition of warrenty and service.

Like I mentioned before I also am interested in the software.
