I'm putting together a system for my nephew who will be going to college soon. Bought a linksys 10/100 LAN card card and can't get the drivers to install correctly. I actually followed the directions but when booting windows (XP) detects the card does its thing, then I follow the directions that came with the card and I get this error message "An error occured during the installation of the device. the name is either in use as a service name or or as a service display name." When I go into system properties the device is shown with the yellow exclamtion point. If I unistall the device, restart the computer, windows will find it again, report the above error message and in system properties it will be listed as LinkSys fast ethernet connetion #2. When I unistall that, restart, it will show #3 but there is only one ethernet connection shown. I've put the card in different PCI slot but that didn't help. I be stumped.

Sometimes certain hardware just doesn't like certain computers - that's life. I like Linksys cards but some times I'm working on a computer that won't take one. Then I try something else. Might be an IRQ channle conflict.

If you want a REALLY painless way of adding a NIC, and it doesn't need to be 100Mbit (10Mbit is more than adequate for Internet, printing, and casual file sharing) then try one of the Linksys USB NICS - I carry a couple in my repair kit for emergencies. A LOT less hassle than installing a card on short notice in a client's office.

It's tiny - about the size of a cigarette lighter and it's about $25. There's a $5 rebate on it until September. Office Depot and Best Buy usually have them, or you can order it here: http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?s ... 18&loc=101

Thanks FP. Tried every slot and the same thing still happens. I am convinced that somewhere there are left over remnants of the drivers. Why else would device manager keep seeing the card as another one and shown it as LinkSys fast ethernet connetion #2. Every time I try to straighten it out it adds another #. I am up to 10 now but still only one that shows in the device manager.

Insert XP cd and boot up format c: and it will work like a charm. I've got 2 different linksys nics... I've seen what your talking about for some reason it does that but mine will still work... Somewhere in the reg it has stored all of the info from when it was installed before. Haven't found it yet but it still works here so i'm not too worried.

The damn network icon wouldn't even show up in the sytem tray so I guess it wouldn't work. Fixed it Went into the reg and fried everything that had syslink on it. Dangerous stuff but I live a dangerous life Rebooted and installed fine. Of course I have no way of knowing if it really works since I don't have a network here. The boy will have to wait until he gets to college and find out.

Do you have another computer with a NIC installed? You can always connect them together with a reversed cable.

i have 3 of those linksys cards and i have found that they will install very easily if you have a LAN connection. but if you don't, then you will get some errors because when you install, it will search for the LAN connection(depending on your internet connection, and what else you have installed beforehand, assuming it is a new system/configuration); and if you don't have it, hence the errors.

it should be fine. but i would suggest you include the driver disk for the nic card when you deliver to your nephew. if he hooks it up and has problems, i am quite sure he could insert the floppy, go to add new hardware wizard and reinstall that driver from the floppy and everything will be cool.

It's a new system config. I think i have it now. I assume if he does have problems someone At Indiana State U. will be able to straighten it out.
