ethernet cables are differently wired then token ring ones right? i've made some token ring cables b4, but am upgrading to ethernet, and wondered if the token ring wires could be snipped off and rewired so i don't gotta buy new cables?!?!
i use the reg RJ45 ends for my cables, btw. thx a mill!

As far as I understood token ring did not use all 4 pairs so you might have some split drops. Where as 100baseT drop needs all 4 pairs to come anywhere near 100. Anyhow if you have cat 5 cable all you would need to do is put connectors on in the right configuration.

Neither Token Ring nor 10/100 Ethernet nor ATM uses all 4 pairs for transceiving. The extra 2 pairs are for noise suppression. The only technology that uses all 4 pairs is Gigabit Ethernet. Token Ring is a lot more forgiving than Ethernet when it comes to cable specs. I would suggest you buy premade cables instead of making them yourself. 90% of the times, network problems are directly related to cable. I used to run a very large network, and the only time I took out the crimper was when I had to run cables from the PBX to the IDF. Voice is a lot more tolerant than data as far as cable goes.
