48x12x48 CDRW? How fast will it make a disk?

Just how fast does a 48x burner burn?
Figuring about 15 minutes I think for my 8x (haven't burned a whole disk for awhile, so not real sure)
then does a 48x get it done in 3 minutes?
Does a 48x actually burn at 48x or does it drop back to 24x for various reasons most the time and not get a true 48x speed?
Is most media gonna burn fast, or do I have to buy expensive CDR's rated at 48x instead of the less expensive normal stuff?
Same questions on the 12x RW part too.
Gonna buy a new burner. Wondering if a 48x is truely faster than a 32x? Also planning to buy Lite-On brand.
All my systems are Xp1700 with 256 meg ddr that I would use this in. Probably a maxtor 7200 ATA133
60gig drive or better. Win98 Se. Though I do plan to experiment to 2k and linux soon.
$22 difference in price between the 32x and 48x, so will the 48x be a better deal without having to use extra expensive media? Otherwise, they look the same spec wise I think.
Thanks

Is there enough difference between a lite-on burner speed to be worth buying a faster one the the first listed here?
32x12x40x burner $55
40x12x48x burner $74
48x12x48x burner $86
I read the review, but still wonder which Lite-on I want?
I am geussing they are all the same other than the speed. Same abilities, software, etc..
I want something faster than this 12x4x??x I have now for burning mostly CDrw though I will be doing many CDr's too of course. I'll give this Sony 12x one to my daughter, Then she don't have to use my system as much

Pretty sure you are right that the only differnce is the speed but all else is the same. I have a Lite On 24X burner that has done me very well. It was an upgrade from a 4X burner and still seems plenty fast for me. I burned a back up copy of Win XP in about 3 min.

Keep in mind that a 32X will burn in about 3 Min or so. To cut that in half to 1.5 min would take a 64x burner (and I don't think there's any such animal).
The speed gain going from a 32x to a 48x is practically non-existent (amounts to a few seconds).
I've also found that some drive subsystems can't even maintain 32X reliably (granted most of us here have high performance systems). For instance my Athlon 700 server running Win2K can't burn 32X without buffer underrun protection kicking in but my Athlon 900 can do 32X without a hitch (both using the same model Lite-On 32x drive).
I'm very happy with Lite-On's 32X drive.

I went from a 8x hp to a 32x liteon big differnce. A freind of mine just got the 48x, there is very little differnce between his and mine.

Thanks to all.
I think I will go with the 32x then. I mostly want that extra speed for CDRW's but CDR's need to be faster too than I have now. If all else is the same I see no reason to spend the extra money for the 48x.
I think at around 3 minutes to burn a full disk I will be very happy! Don't need anything faster.
Heck It takes me more time than that just to find the blank disks

If you buy the 32x there is a firmware flash that will make it 40x
Check Here
I have not tried it and as always...if you do try it there is a posibiltiy of toasting the drive.

Calindor over in the cdn forum flashed his up and then went back to normal speed. Disk errors were showing up on the burned disk at the higher speed although no errors were found when running.
My 12x media burns at up to 32x only on my 40x and I have to use it up anyway. Burning an image from my hard drive of a program takes about 3 minutes now!
So far real happy with the liteon 40/12/48 and it was very cheap and is still about 80 us with taxes up here. The 48x is about 96 us and the 32x is down to about 61 us with taxes!

I have the Lite-on 32X. So far I love it. I have burned both music and data CD's in about 2 minutes 45 seconds. Not bad, see no need to have anything faster than that. Plus it's quiet. The included Nero software does everything I need it to do.
