Ok, after putting my computer back together, I noticed that my speakers had a sort of ring to them. Constantly. When I do somethong on the computer (like move my mouse, minimize a window, etc) the sound changes to nothing, or higher pitch, or something like it. I think I just hear it now, because before my computer was probably 4-7 DBa's louder. Now it is nearly silent, except for the hard-drive, which has a high-pitched annoying sound, that I can barely hear. but, it still almost drowns out my fans.

What could be causing this? I don't think it's my PSU, as my readings thus far have been great, if not better than my old Antec PSU (I currently have a 350w Enermax FMA).

Is there a way I can test to see if it's my onboard sound, without installing a new one? I am pretty sure my drivers are up to date, as it says: 9-12-2000 in the Device Manager. My onboard sound is a Creative SoundBlaster PCI128.

OK, it's not drivers. It has the same sound while in the BIOS too..

So, what now?

Unplug the hard drive and boot it up with a boot floppy, if the noise is gone you'll know it's the HD.

Why would the noise be caused by the HDD?

It's the sound for sure, believe me.. I stick me ear up to it, and when the speakers are turned off, it stops.. if that's what you mean.

I've had that on a few boards, a Biostar M7VKB and an Asus P4B266. I have no idea what causes it, other than something on the board is feeding noise into the sound chip.

Try disconnecting the audio cable from the soundcard (the cable that connects to the CD drive). If it goes away then maybe you should try a shielded cable.

There is no Audio cable.
It's onboard sound, and has no header for it.

You try unplugging the speakers and then plugging them back in. Static can cause this sometimes too.

do you have you comp hooked to a stereo? some stereos can pick up computer electrical noise. my stereo dont work with my computer, cuz of this. mine gets a high pitch whiny/ crackle noise

Shadow, it WAS hooked up to the stereo, but now it's hooked up to regular speakers..

Jim, the traces are there, but there is no header.. Something they probably took out in the 1 revision..

I've had the same thing happen to me, even with a SBLive. I found that it was a noisy cd-rom audio input. I would suggest you mute anything you don't plan on using alot. Using the mixer, you should be able to adjust the output gain to eliminate the noise as much as possible.

You had me misinformed. LOL, that makes it sound like you said the hard drive is making the noise.
