Heres the thing,
I am a mobile sound recording engineer and have over the years watched the size of my equipment shrink to what it is today. At present I record everythng onto ADAT digital tape recorders but I then have to transfer it onto my aging PC to edit. What I thought was what if I actually record directly onto a PC and cut out all the laborious dumping stage.
Two thoughts.
Firstly reliability ...Do PCs like being driven 200 miles to a venue in the back of a car? Laptops are supposed to be portable...is a laptop the way forward or can I build a really keen PC for half the price?
Secondly noise.. MY old PC is very noisy but if I use good "silent" components from someone like zalmantech.com will this be a better option?
You tell me your experiences and I will listen.

The main problem you will run into as a recording engineer is interference from the computer...

Do you use a USB recording device? If so, I say go with a notebook. It'll cost ya, but it is worth it.

If you plan to use an internal card, you have no choice but to go with a PC. Then, pick up a quality sound card like the audiophile 2496, and you are set.

I would lean towards a high-end USB device with a notebook, simply because you will learn to hate lugging around a PC, monitor, cables, etc.
